No matter how much technology is introduced and used in the healthcare field, the top concern will always be the patients. This is why patient care is important and this is how the healthcare industry measures, tracks and finds the best solutions to provide the best patient care.

Why does the healthcare system measure outcomes?

The first reason is to enhance and create the best patient experience. Patient experience encompasses everything from the moment the patient walks into the door to the moment they walk back out of those doors. The healthcare systems set in place could make or break patient experience. This deals with patient satisfaction and patient-centered care. All of these notions come down to one final question: how can we improve patient care?

The next thing is improving the health of populations. This means making sure the hospital, healthcare system and other procedures in place are all helping the public, not just the patients at the hospital at the moment.

A huge factor in the healthcare industry is money. Like all businesses, the healthcare industry needs to make money for research, pay staff and for equipment. A great example of helping with patient care is hospital acquired infections. In 2015, a study was published that shows that 1.7 million hospital acquired infections happen each year  and cost between $96 billion to $147 billion dollars annually.  This one issue alone can be a huge financial burden on a hospital. This doesn’t include accidents, staff turnover, replacement of medical supplies and everything else to keep a hospital running.

Finally, physician and nurse burnout are a major issue in the healthcare field costing thousands of dollars and a main concern for patient care and safety. It’s important for nurses and physicians to take time to communicate, help and understand their patient’s concerns and needs. This is a major contributing factor of why patient care is important: nurses and physicians who are burnt out will disconnect with patients, always feel negative emotions, will be more sick and tired and other major concerns. This all decreases the patient care happening each day inside the hospital. A nurse who is disconnected, tired and sick will not treat and care for patients the same way a happy and healthy nurse will.

How these outcomes are measured

A standard is set in the healthcare community on how to measure patient care. This is set in place by the National Association for Healthcare Quality (NAHQ). This measures patient care based on state and federal government, accreditation requirements that need to be met and financial incentives. When a hospital meets these requirements on both a state and federal level, the government will provide more funding and incentives. The better your patient care, the better you’ll be taken care of. This is all measured in their electronic database that can be access by all healthcare professionals who work at the hospital and the higher up healthcare executives. These are the quality measures that the healthcare industry looks at:

  • Health outcomes
  • Clinical processes
  • Patient safety
  • Efficient use of healthcare resources
  • Care coordination
  • Patient engagements
  • Population and public health
  • Adherence to clinical guidelines

So, why is all of this important in the healthcare industry? This is what healthcare executives can look at when hiring, setting a global standard for their hospital, getting more funding which provides a better system overall and set better patient care standards in place if lacking.

The aim to all of this at the end of the day is improving patient care. This is why patient care is  important in the healthcare industry. A hospital who is taking care of their patients will do better overall. All of these items are measures to help make a more efficient, transparent and better environment for everyone.
